Feb 8th is the feast day of St Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese-born former slave who became a nun. It is also the international day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. St Bakhita’s experience of being enslaved and sold continues today with human trafficking still being one of the largest illegal industries. Ruth Kilcullen from MECPATHS (Mercy Efforts to Counter Child Prostitution and Trafficking in the Hospitality Sector) represented their campaign at an international youth symposium on human trafficking in the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Her organisation are inviting people to spend some time in prayer and reflection on Feb 8th, to consider how to protect vulnerable people, in particular children.
Ruth spoke with Miriam about how prostitution and the trafficking of people stems from an oppressive hierarchical culture and that it is hard to separate the two. Miriam began by asking her whether the recent election of Donald Trump was contributing to this oppressive culture.
Excellent. A very coprehensive explanation.Easy to listen and gripping in its contents.
Thanks
