In this piece from 2005, we look back at some of the work of Fr. Peter McVerry SJ

Fr Peter McVerry SJ has been working with Dublin’s young homeless for more than 30 years. During this time he has campaigned tirelessly for the rights of these young people. He speaks about how he began working in this area, how it is paramount to help younger homeless people before they fall into the routine of homelessness and how he has no regrets, despite the sad and difficult situations he has faced.

How sad to hear this interview and to realise that the situation regarding homelessness has worsened dramatically. I was particularly affected by Peter’s consideration that homelessness needs to be addressed before becoming a way of life. It makes me realise that our society is being changed irreparably by the crisis in homelessness today.
