The Church of Ireland has appointed it’s first ever female bishop in its history.Reverend Pat Storey, a 53yr old married mother of two adult children has been appointed as the new Bishop of Meath and Kildare.

Speaking with Conor Deane from Soul Waves Radio she admitted that she “was blind sided” and “didn’t see it coming. I thought maybe Richard (Archbishop of Armagh) was joking.”

Asked about becoming the first female bishop Rev Storey said gender was a secondary concern.

“I know it is an issue for some, but for me it isn’t a big deal. I am simply Pat and always will be.” she revealed.

The 53-year-old currently serves in a parish in Derry City and is married to Earl Storey.

Rev Pat Storey studied at Trinity College Dublin, before training at the Church of Ireland Theological College. She also lived in Shankill south county Dublin while her husband was in ministry at Crinken Church.

She was ordained a deacon in 1997 and a priest the following year. The bishop-elect has been rector of St Augustine’s in Derry for almost a decade but says she will always regard Derry as her second home especially as her daughter lives there full time.

The Church of Ireland’s choice of a female bishop is the first in Britain and Ireland in any Anglican church.

One response to “Bishop Elect Rev Patricia Storey”

  1. Michael McCullagh says:

Bishop Pat Storey speaks of reaching the next generation. That is a challenge facing all churches. In fact I often think of 20-20 vision but I am thinking of the year 2020. So if we add seven years to each member of our congregations including our pastors then we get a clearer picture of what the age profiles of our congregations will be like.
Another great interview from Soul Waves and many thanks to Conor Deane for providing it.
