Last year the Children and Family Relationships Act, allowed for the creation of children through the eggs or sperm of third parties, i.e., ‘donors’, but the resultant child has no right to know his or her natural parent or parents until they are 18. The Iona Institute, a Christian Think Tank, is calling this an “attack on the right of a child to be cared for by her natural parents”. They believe that the severing of this natural connection is being done in order to satisfy the wishes of adults to conceive without giving full consideration to the rights of the child.

Earlier this year, Ireland was before the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to discuss our progress in implementing the Convention on Children’s Rights (CRC). Dr. Tom Finegan of the Iona Institute, commented that the issue of egg and sperm donation must be considered very seriously by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. He believes it should find against third party human reproduction. He explained more to Miriam Gormally.
