The recent Prime Time programme Breach of Trust uncovered many unpleasant truths about childcare in Ireland. Parents all over the country were horrified that children could be looked after in such a manner. However Breda O’Brien, writing for the Irish Times, said that we shouldn’t really be shocked that stressed and poorly-paid staff are treating children badly. She explains to Miriam Gormally that while it is a sensitive issue, parents need to think long and hard about what is best for their children and that countries need to prioritise childcare needs and not leave it to businesses.
