Changing Attitude Ireland

Every year coming up to our AGM, we post our most listened to piece of the year. This piece looked the group Changing Attitude Ireland and was first posted on June 29th.

This month saw Dublin host a vibrant Pride Festival. Before the festival, Changing Attitude Ireland held what has become an annual service of thanksgiving and remembrance at St. Audoen’s Church. Dr Leo Kilroy of Glendalough diocese and secretary of Changing Attitude Ireland said it was ecumenical service that it was an opportunity to give thanks for the advances in civil liberties of LGBT+ people as well as remember those who have contributed to these advances, but are no longer with us, such as Dr Ann Louise Gilligan. Another significant moment of the Pride Festival was when Leo Varadaker, Ireland’s first openly gay Taoiseach addressed the crowd.

Despite such celebrations, there are still disagreements within the Church which remain unresolved. Miriam Gormally met with Dr Leo who is an advocate for celebrating same-sex marriage in the Church. Earlier this year, he proposed a motion to the general Synod of the Church of Ireland that the bishops develop a public thanksgiving service for legally married same-sex couples. The motion was defeated, but Dr Leo said that he nonetheless remains positive about the Church and about his faith. He explained more about Changing Attitude Ireland to Miriam Gormally.

What an interesting and articulate man. Funny how his evident Christian beliefs are probably less understood and shared by many than his support of LGBT issues.

Excellent interview. Well done Leo Kilroy.
