Michael O'Sullivan

The role of Church in society is often a contentious one, with some protesting at the sign of any public symbol of religion and others feeling the loss of a communal sense of celebration. Miriam Gormally spoke with Michael O’Sullivan SJ, author and academic, about the question of how there can be room for public prayer or celebration without offending those who don’t share the beliefs of the majority. They also looked at issues where the Church could learn from secular society, such as the role of women in leadership positions. Miriam began by asking him whether specific things such as prayer before Dáil proceedings, which has caused people to complain, should be retained or removed.
