Fr Frank Browne SJ left behind some 40,000 negatives from his 60 years of taking photographs. His most famous photographs were the last images of the Titanic and of Captain Edward Smith, which were printed in newspaper around the world following the disaster.

He also worked as a chaplain to the Irish Guards and served on the Western Front in the First World War. During his time as chaplain, he also took many photographs of the men who were serving there. These photographs and his life on the frontier were the subject of an RTE documentary. Here Pat Coyle talks with Róisin Duffy, writer, producer and presenter of this documentary. The documentary can be seen on RTE’s realplayer for the next three weeks.

Fascinating interview. Pat’s sensitivity to the subject allowed Róisín to share the wonder and tenderness of Father Browne’s wonderful photography. I must watch the documentary!
