The Jonathan Swift festival takes place this year, Nov 23^rd to 26^th and marks the 350^th anniversary of Swift’s birthday. Born in Nov 30^th 1667, he was appointed Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in 1713, making him the 50^th Dean of St Patrick’s. His appointment came after failed attempts to secure employment in England, due to his support of the then out of favour Tory party.

As well as championing issues of social justice, and being an author of repute, Swift was also renowned for his efficiency and administrative ability and as a result, many of the documents from St Patrick’s Cathedral are from his tenure.

Miriam Gormally met with Dr. Susan Hood, Librarian and archivist of the Representative Church Body to find out more about the documents from St. Patrick’s Cathedral and what they tell us about Jonathan Swift.
