The debate over maternal suicide and abortion continues to weigh heavily in Ireland. For some the answers may be clear, but what if somebody is gang raped under an oppressive dictatorship? Michael O’Sullivan SJ, Director of the Applied Christian Spirituality Postgraduate programme in All Hallows, discusses two women, one a nun, who became pregnant when gang raped and what they decided to do.

He says that we can’t judge others in extreme situations, when we have no understanding of what it’s like to live under the constant threat of violence. Fr. Michael worked for years in Chile under the Pinochet regime, when Liberation Theology, often considered a radical branch of the Church, was gathering force.

Fr. Michael began by saying to Pat Coyle that Liberation Theology has come back under the spotlight after the appointment of Pope Francis and that he felt the in his heart, Pope Francis was with Liberation Theology.
