Pope Francis and Vatican II

Vatican Council II was the most important religious event of the twentieth century, with repercussions that reached far beyond the Catholic church. John O’Malley SJ is the author of “What Happened at Vatican II?” a book capturing the drama of the council, depicting the colourful characters involved and their clashes with one another. His analysis, based on official documentation as well as the insights of a man who was there at the time provides a critical resource into understanding the Church of today. Pat Coyle spoke with John and put it to him that the one thing he could never have predicted was the election of a Jesuit pope and she asked him what difference Pope Francis has made to the trajectory of Church history.
I found this a very hopeful interview. May Francis live to see these possibilities flourish, bringing the church back to Jesus. I loved the understanding of the position of Catholics today that John demonstrated.
