This year marks the 500^th anniversary of Raphael, one of the great Italian Renaissance painters, who died on 6 April 1520. Michael Collins, a Catholic priest and author living in Dublin wrote Raphael’s World to give some insight into the era he lived in – one of major political and social change. Born thirty years after the invention of the Gutenberg printing press, he saw its potential for art work and used it ensure more people were able to have access to his work.

He was also highly sought out by popes, kings and aristocrats to decorate their residences and the book introduces the reader to the myriad of fascinating patrons that existed in his day. Despite dying young, at 37, he remains one of the most remarkable painter of the era. Michael Collins explains more to Miriam Gormally.
