The Troubles has been a subject of much study and discussion but an aspect that is often overlooked is the perspective of women; even more so religious women. Dr. Diane Kirby, Reader in American Studies at the University of Ulster, wanted to hear some of these marganilised voices to gain a fuller understanding of the conflict. Many of these Sisters found themselves in an area of conflict without much training and their overwhelming response was to just “get on with it”. Many of them saw that the clear alternative to violence was education and the Sisters often  promoted integrated schools, sometimes against the wishes of the church hierarchy. Miriam Gormally met Dianne at the International Interdisciplinary Conference looking at the Role of Church in a Pluralist Society. Dianne began by explaining what insights she got from allowing these sisters to tell their story.
