James MacMillan CBE is described by his peers as “one of the most successful living composers”. He is also a prolific conductor, engaging audiences around the world with his work. Strongly influenced by his Scottish origin and Catholic faith, some of his major recent works include his St John Passion, co-commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Boston Symphony and Rundfunkchor Berlin. His Mysteries of Light, received its world premiere by the Minnesota Orchestra and Jean-Yves Thibaudet conducted by Osmo Vänskä in 2011. But James is an ordinary man with an extraordinary passion. James talks to Jo Smith about his upbringing and community of faith and his view of the interplay between God and music.
