We take a look back at a piece with Sr. Marie Stuart who talks with Fr. Brendan Coffey of Glenstal Abbey about the origins of Lent. 

The season of Lent coincides with spring time each year. Historically it has been associated with difficult, maybe even miserable times when the weather – in Ireland at any rate – is usually bad and people took on a severe regime of fasting and prayer for forty days. Fr Brendan Coffey of Glenstal Abbey talked with Marie Stuart about the origins of Lent, seeing it as a preparation time for Baptism and for Easter and a different understanding of the penitential aspect of Lent.
