The Rise of Christianity in China
Many people today only think of China as the world’s fastest-growing capitalist economy, a place where many Irish jobs are now relocated. When Mao’s Communists came to power in 1949, China had less than a million Protestants and about three million Catholics. Today there is a phenomenal growth in the number of Christians. A survey in 2004 put the figures at 18 million Protestants and 12 million Catholics – some even say there are at least 80 million Christians throughout China. The Rev. Patrick Comerford was part of a delegation to China recently and he told Eileen Good about the changes there.
