Gustavo Gutierrez, founder of liberation theology gave it the central tenet of, “the preferential option for the poor” or “option for the poor” as it is often known. This service of the poor is also one of the clear guiding principals of Pope Francis’ theology. The phrase was also seen to have links with Marxism. Pat Coyle spoke with Gerry Wheelan SJ, economist, academic and author of several papers drawing on the theology of Robert Doran and Bernard Lonergan to try to better understand “Option for the Poor.” Pat began by suggesting that it might create guilt in those who are better off and give the impression that God was only for the poor.
