At this time of year many students are returning to University or starting to go for the first time. For many it is an exciting experience, for others it is a lonely time. Miriam Gormally met with Fr. Leon Ó Giolláin S.J. who is one of the Chaplains in UCD. He talked about some of the challenges students face as well as the things that Chaplains have to offer. Miriam also put it to him that there had been some voices saying that Chaplaincy no longer had a role to play in modern education – something Fr. Leon thinks is ideological rather than reflecting the reality on the ground. But she first began asking him what it was like for students and about some of the practical things that the Chaplaincy can offer.
