Climate Change: the Christian Calling

The recent United Nations climate change conference in Paris in December was declared by Francois Hollande as a “revolution for climate change.” 150 presidents and prime ministers were present, the largest ever single-day gathering of heads of state. Éamonn Meehan, Executive Director of Trócaire, was also present representing the Christian obligation to remember the poorest of the poor. Serious agreements were reached to set targets to limit global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius.
However there were concerns that countries, including Ireland, would be looking for exemptions for their own industries – agribusiness in the case of Ireland. Miriam Gormally asked Éamonn Meehan to talk about the Christian imperative to take action, but first asked him to describe what the conference was like and whether he was optimistic about whether countries would really take it as seriously as they said they would at the conference.
