Bernadette Fahy, counsellor, writer and survivor of institutional abuse talks with Pat Coyle about how her faith was broken by the Church. She says that the faith of survivors was broken, not just once but three times. She grew up in Goldenbridge, and in her book, Freedom of Angels she tells the inside story of growing up in one of Ireland’s most notorious orphanages, where children were made to pay for the ‘sins’ of their parents. She entered when she was seven and stayed there until she was sixteen.
She works now as a counsellor helping others to rebuild their lives after unimaginable suffering. In this interview she also argues that the only way for the Church to truly redeem itself is to divest themselves of their wealth, return to their humble roots and live a life in keeping with the original simplicity and compassion of Jesus.
I found this hard to hear. It is so sad that anyone would feel so badly. Yet, I am glad that Bernadette has a voice and has been given attention in this medium.
