Creating Community

2013 is the year of the Gathering, a time to bring community together. Miriam Gormally spoke with Fr. Michael McCullagh about his work with community and Diaspora. He spoke about how people create community, but how they can also exclude others. He looked at the creation of community within Communion and Miriam put it to him that Communion and the Eucharist can also be something that excludes, with the possibility of excommunication hanging over the heads of those who legislate on abortion. But first Fr. Michael began by taking about a community that is often excluded within Ireland, the Travelling Community.

Once again, Miriam has asked the hard question. Exclusion is not part of gospel values, yet it can be part of Church practice. Michael dealt with it quite well but the issues remain.
