Abortion Amendment

The Very Reverend Victor Griffin does not expect as bitter and divisive a debate on the abortion issue now compared with the 1983 referendum, which signed into law a constitutional ban on abortion. At the time of the Pro-Life Amendment Campaign, he was Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and a sponsor of the Anti-Amendment Campaign. The Protestant churches along with many liberal Catholics, while against abortion, held that Dáil Éireann was the proper place to deal with abortion issues, not the constitution. Since the death of Savita Halappanavar, debate over abortion continues. Here Victor Griffin explains to Paul Loughlin why he believes things would have been better if Dáil Éireann dealt with the issue, not the constitution.
