On Sunday 1st October, for the first time, Christ Church Cathedral will admit honorary Ecumenical and Lay Canons to its Chapter. Former president of Ireland Mary McAleese and Professor James Lucey, Medical Director of Services and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin have been appointed as the first ever honorary lay ecumenical canons at the Church of Ireland’s Christ Church

The Revd Lorraine Kennedy-Ritchie of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and Fr David Tuohy SJ will be installed as Ecumenical Canons.

Mary McAleese previously received communion in the Cathedral during her presidency, often considered one of the most controversial acts of her time in the Áras. Miriam Gormally spoke with Archbishop Michael Jackson to find out more about the appointments and to question whether the appointment of Mrs. McAleese had any special significance due to the history.

The installations take place during a Service of Choral Evensong in Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday 1st October at 3.30 pm.
