Games of Thrones is a popular fantasy fiction that subverts the traditional ideas of fantasy fiction. This is why, according to David Quinn, it will never be as popular as classics like Lord of the Rings. He argues that the nihilism in it prevents it from being one of the great myths. He talks about how myths in the past gave us clear guidance on good versus evil, but that Game of Thrones offers no relief or moral guidance. There is no narrative of a triumph of Good over evil – the narrative which he also says forms the core of Christian belief. Miriam Gormally put it to him that the very thing he objects to might be the reason it is so popular – it refuses to offer any easy or obvious narrative. But she began by asking him why he watched it if he wasn’t a fan.
