US President John F. Kennedy called Dag Hammarskjöld “the greatest statesman of our century”. Born in Sweeden he was appointed to the post of UN Secretary-General in 1953. During his term, Hammarskjöld tried to smooth relations between Israel and the Arab states. Other highlights include a 1955 visit to China to negotiate release of 11 captured US pilots who had served in the Korean War, the 1956 establishment of the United Nations Emergency Force, and his intervention in the 1956 Suez Crisis. He was also a deeply spiritual and man. Dr. Roger Lipsey is author of a new book, Hammarskjöld: A Life. Lipsey believes that Hammarskjöld death in a plane crash in 1961 was no accident and says that he is a mystic and martyr. In this interview from the archives, he explains more to Pat Coyle.
