The Bishops’ Appeal is the Church of Ireland’s world aid development programme and depends on collections that are made during the periods of Lent and Harvest.  The Church’s General Synod in May heard that annual takings were down 20 percent because of the economic situation.  But on the other hand there was no single major demand on funds due to a particular disaster appeal.  Funds are distributed among health, education and agriculture as well as disaster relief projects in the third world.  The Bishops’ Appeal Education Officer, Lydia Monds, also promotes funds to alleviate poverty among women.  70 percent of the world’s poor are women.  Lydia explained to Paul Loughlin how the Bishops’ Appeal works and how lifting women out of poverty has a strong beneficial effect on the societies in which poverty-stricken women live.
