Climate change is the greatest challenge of our generation – we hear it all the time. It has almost become a refrain. But, asks Dr Lorna Gold author and specialist in International Development, do we really believe it? And are we willing to act on it. This week, from Sept 20-27th, there will be a whole range of strikes taking place across the world. The week will kick off with a massive strike on Friday Sept 20th, going from Custom House Quay at 12.00 up to Merrion square for 1pm and another in Cork rallying on Grand Street Parade at 1pm and marching to Cork city hall. There will also be numerous smaller strikes all over the country. Children will be joined by adults, taking to the street in protest at a better future.
In her book, Climate Generation: Awakening to Our Children’s Future, Lorna shares her personal journey in understanding what those two words ‘climate change’ mean for her as a mother seeking to protect her children and, by extension, the world of which we are all a part. She is also vice-chair of the Global Catholic Climate Movement and a member of the Irish Government’s Advisory Group on the National Climate Dialogue and speaks extensively on Pope Francis’ teachings in Laudato Sí.
In this interview Miriam explores the various climate strike actions that are taking place, what needs to be done and why this movement has been largely led by children rather than adults. Miriam begins by asking her why this Friday, Sept 20th was chosen for the big strike.
