Few people today in Ireland would be concerned about people of different faith traditions marrying, but in the past, especially in Northern Ireland, it was a subject that would have been taboo. Here from the archives, Jan 2005, is a piece with Eoin de Bhaldraithe OSCO, a member of the Cistercian community in Bolton Abbey, Moone, Co Kildare. Eoin contributed to the book ‘Studies: An Irish quarterly Review’ in 1988 with an article named ‘Mixed Marriages and Irish Politics : The Effect of “Ne Temere”. Here he speaks to Miriam Gormally about how mixed marriages in Northern Ireland caused a great deal of social stress and how clergy members found it difficult to accommodate each other. He talks about children from mixed marriages, the concept of double belonging and the progress that has been made.
