Pope Benedict XV1 is one of the best-known Roman Catholic theologians and a prolific author. He served as a professor at various German universities and was a theological consultant at the Second Vatican Council before becoming Archbishop of Munich and Freising and then Cardinal.  At the time of his election as Pope, Benedict had been Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and Dean of the College of Cardinals.  Michael Paul Gallagher is an Irish Jesuit who is Dean of Theology at the Gregorian University, the largest and oldest school of Theology in Rome – Piaras Jackson asked him if the portrayal of the Pope as a rational academic is valid.
