Reaction to Brexit

Pat Riordan is an Irish Jesuit, who lives and works in Britain, lecturing in Heythrop College on Political Science. He talks about how the vote to leave the European Union is a great blow to the idea of Union – that it shows an abandonment of the principles of sticking together and solving things through political resolutions. Pat Coyle put it to him that some of the issues such as pluralism, difference and how to work with unity are issues that are just as relevant to the Church. Pat Riordan began by explaining his own response to the vote.
I found this analysis excellent – balanced and open. It is wonderful once again to recognise Jesuit vision. Still, as Pat points out, there is much to be done to redress the various fault lines that shake future possibilities. May we indeed come to know a new unity, recognising our collective imperfections, while also striving towards a dream of true unity.
