When it comes to helping children with autism, it is sometimes the high functioning ones who can be left behind or not get the help they need. So say Niamh Deane founder of the Tabor Children’s Trust, a registered chairty based in Dublin, Ireland.

She and her husband, Conor have three children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), all of them high functioning. Niamh said that sometimes because the high functioning children do so well, it is assumed that they can survive in all circumstances, but that is often not the case. Niamh and Conor struggled to get the professional help for their children and to find a suitable education system that could cater to their children’s needs and it was this reason that Niamh embarked on a journey to set up a charity to help other families access the suitable educational and professional services they need. Her eventual goal is to set up a Montessori school for gifted children, to allow those who have special abilities, but also special needs to fully blossom. She explained more to Miriam Gormally.
