Can sacrifice be joyful? In his book Micheal McGuckian SJ explores various understandings of sacrifice, noting that along the way Christianity lost the practice of it. He begins by looking at what our core or basic understanding of sacrifice is. ‘In normal parlance’, he says, it’s usually about giving up something. So we say that Jesus gave up his life on the cross’. But he also came across another notion of sacrifice, namely that it’s a meal, a party, a celebration, with gifts and offerings and food.

In his recent book, The Holy Sacrifice of Mass: A Search for an Acceptable Notion of Sacrifice, he explores how the emphasis of the Mass should be on the joy of the resurrection rather than the crucifixion and how that would change the way we look at the Mass. He explains more to Pat Coyle.
