The Resurrection is the central tenet of Christianity says Eugene McCaffrey OCD. It represents the beginning of something new and miraculous. Fr Eugene believes that the people who took part in the 1916 Rising chose Easter time because they had in mind the resurrection of Ireland and the creating of a new country. He cites the poetry of Padraig Pearse to illustrate how the mystery of the resurrection was an inspiration for his role in the Rising and quotes Pearse’s poem The Fool where he says,

“Lord, I have staked my soul, I have staked the lives of my kin
On the truth of Thy dreadful word. Do not remember my failures,
But remember this my faith had ”

He explained more to Miriam Gormally.
