Unsung Hero

This is a piece from 2005 when Peter McVerry SJ won an award for his work in the “People of the Year Awards”

Peter McVerry SJ has been working with Dublin’s young homeless for over 40 years now. At the time, the Peter McVerry Trust provided two homeless hostels for the under 18 age group, three hostels for the over 18 age group, one drug detox house and two aftercare houses. Those numbers have grown, unfortunately along with the numbers of homeless people. Here he speaks to us about who the real heroes are, about the inadequate services for young homeless people in our society and how he gained the nickname  ‘the hedge’.
