A Tale of Two Belvederes is the story of two houses, both called ‘Belvedere House.’ Belvedere House in Mullingar, built by ‘the wicked earl’, Robert Rochfort, and Belvedere House in Great Denmark Street, Dublin (now part of Belvedere College), built by his son, George. Belvedere House in Dublin was brought by the Jesuits in 1841 and has given its name to one of Ireland’s best-known schools ever since. The other house is an exhibition centre. Miriam Gormally met Oliver Murphy, a former teacher in Belvedere School and he told her the tale the two Belvederes, starting first with the startling story of the Wicked Earl in Mullingar.
