As the topic of women in the Church comes to the fore, we take a look back at this piece about Mary Magdalene from March 2005, around the time of the publication of ‘The Da Vinci Code’. She has been referred to the second most important women in the New Testament after Mary, the mother of Jesus. Wilfred Harrington, an Irish Dominican Priest and lecturer in Theology and Philosophy, talks about the misconception of Mary Magdalene as the reformed prostitute and suggests instead that she had a mental illness that was cured by Jesus. Miriam Gormally asks about the reasons behind this misconception and if there is any truth in the suggestion by ‘The Da Vinci Code’ that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married.
