In this piece from the archive, we hear from best selling author Richard Leonard SJ believes that Pope Francis is “utterly inspired” in focusing of compassion in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Speaking to the thousands of people who came to the Marian shrine in Knock on Monday 22 August 2016 for the annual novena there, he also said that gratitude and forgiveness were also part of mercy.

In this interview with Pat Coyle he details other important facet of mercy – starting with one that many would find surprising – obedience. Stemming from the Latin word “audire” meaning ‘to listen’, Richard Leonard says the Pope is calling on people to listen attentively to the very heart of God and obey the nuanced wisdom and instruction for our lives that flows from that listening.
