The new Dean of St Patrick’s, the Very Revd Dr William Morton was particularly noted for his cross–community and ecumenical events in his previous role in St Columb’s Cathedral Londonery. He continues to feel that ecumenical issues are very important and that all the Christian churches need to work together.

He points to the Eucharist as an issue that still causes theological division. Drawing on his own experience he says that there is a desire for unity and reform from the “person in the pew” and how they are “going to leave behind the person in the ivory tower” and “forge ahead themselves”. He says the theological reform will be much slower, but thinks that Pope Francis is beginning to look at the issue of opening up communion to more people. He explains more to Miriam Gormally of Soul Waves Radio.
