Bealtaine

Bealtaine, the Irish for May, is a time for celebration. And every year it is marked by the Bealtaine festival – a national celebration of creativity in older age. The ancient festival of Bealtiane or Beltane – held on May 1 – marked the midway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice and heralded the start of summer. A fitting time for celebrating the second half of our lives.

The festival is run by Age & Opportunity, the national organisation that promotes active and engaged living as we get older. The festival aims to inspire and empower older people to live healthy and fulfilling lives and to influence policy to ensure the active participation of older people in ways that benefit communities and wider society. Miriam Gormally met with Anne Kearney, communications manager with Age and Opportunity to find out more about the festival and to learn in particular about the transformation of Temple Bar and the power of Play.
