End of an Era?

The Sisters of Charity recently announced that they would end any involvement in the new maternity hospital on the grounds of St Vincent’s. Their decision came after much public debate on the issue. While many welcomed the decision, there were others who were more hesitant. John McManus in the Irish Times, wrote that it was never about the Catholic ethos but about “who would own four hospitals in South Dublin”. David Quinn, commentator with the Irish Independent and Irish Catholic, agreed with the Irish Times article retweeting it, adding,
The big victor in the maternity hospital row is the board of St Vincent’s Healthcare Group. Take a bow guys.”
Miriam Gormally met with David Quinn to find out more about the potential end of a era for religious involvement these hospitals and what it would mean for the future healthcare at St Vincent’s.
What a clear interview on this emotive subject. The hard questions were asked, allowing David Quinn to put this important perspective into the open. Simple truths such as telling the full story of religious involvement in different moments and that of the basic principle of medicine to do no harm can now be heard with the clarity they deserve.
