In Memory of Lyra McKee

The death of Lyra McKee should be the end of all violence in Northern Ireland, so says Don Mullan, author and journalist who grew up only 200 metres away from the street where Lyra was shot. She was killed by indiscriminate fire as she observed clashes between police and New IRA dissidents on the Creggan estate in Derry.

He himself covered the troubles and wrote the book, “Eyewitness Bloody Sunday” so Lyra’s death for him marked a terrible tragedy and reminder of how Ireland must follow a new road map to peace.

While thoroughly condemning the horrific act of the indiscriminate fire that caused Lyra’s death, he also had questions around why the PSNI and the army were in the Creggan at 10pm on Holy Thursday, seeing it as particularly insensitive to the community there. He explains more to Miriam Gormally.
