David Quinn, columnist with the Irish Independent and the Irish Catholic as well as director of the Iona Institute has rejected the comments by former president Mary McAleese. She described Pope Francis’s plan to ask a synod of bishops to advise him on whether church teaching on the family should change as “completely bonkers”. He says that the comment is “inflammatory, maybe deliberately so”  and that the bishops have every right to talk about matters that relate to the Church and to the Faithful. He met with Miriam Gormally to explain more.
