The Pope’s Children

In this piece from the archives, we hear from David McWilliams, who says Christians might be fighting a futurist battle. He says that the younger generation have a la carte values, but that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

He wrote the book in Search of the Pope’s Children which tracked Ireland’s successful young entrepreneurs, where he claimed that Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ireland in 1979 coincided with a baby boom, which peaked nine months after the visit. He calls these people “The Pope’s Children” and looks at their new-found sophistication.   Ian Poulton met David McWilliams and asked him whether “The Pope’s Children” had any spiritual values.

Very interesting interview and reflection, in harmony with my own observations. It is good to hear it voiced. A real engagement, almost parallel to our new reality. I got hope from David’s comments and realise it’s that the ground in shifting rather than giving way. I was hopeful too with regard to environmental concerns being embraced more fully by the young. Thanks to both of you, Ian and David.
