A new development in evangelisation was recently put into action in the Archdiocese of Armagh.

‘The Twelve’, was initiated by Fr Gerry Campbell (Chaplain to NSC: Ireland), in response to the challenge of involving lay people more closely in the work of evangelisation. Inspired while he was on sabbatical in Berkley University in California, Fr. Campbell decided to do something to boost morale in the Church. Based on the idea of the twelve apostles, he wanted to gather a group to create a programme that would include a whole mix of people in evangelisation.

The formal commissioning of ‘The Twelve’ by Cardinal Seán Brady took place last December, auspiciously on the 12.12.12 in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh. Their first project was to organise a mission for the Pastoral Area of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Co. Louth, a combination of three parishes – Kilkerley, Knockbridge and Louth – during the week leading up to Palm Sunday.

The theme chosen for their first Mission was that of ‘Gather, Heal, Go’ and in keeping with the belief that parishioners ought to be involved in the organising of their own mission. He explains more to Conor Deane.
