Covid-19 has shaken China, America and most of Europe. It is now moving into Africa, where the numbers infected have been rising. So far though the virus seems to be moving more slowly in Africa than on other continents and there were some hope that countries in Africa might be more resilient, having younger populations.

However Caoimhe de Barra, CEO of Trócaire, says that there are lots of reasons to be worried that the virus will create a myriad of problems on the continent, including the numbers of people in cities living in overcrowded conditions and a lack of hospital facilities. She added that people would also be faced with the terrible choice of an immediate threat of starvation, if they didn’t work, or the potential threat of the virus if they did, making it hard to them to stay home.

She also pointed out that the virus must be handled collectively and that countries with mean must help others, with the understanding that none are safe unless every country is safe.

Lent is also usually the biggest fundraiser for Trócaire, but this year they won’t be collecting the boxes for safety concerns, but Caoimhe did say that people can ring 1850408408 to donate or go online to www.trocaire.org. She explained more to Miriam Gormally.
