Peter McVerry

We often have a very stereotypical view of homeless people as drug addicts or alcoholics, what Fr. Peter McVerry SJ calls the “visible homeless”. However there are lots of people who fall into the homeless category and in recent times there has been an increase in the new homeless, people without any major social or addiction problem, simply that they cannot afford a place to live. Miriam Gormally talks to Fr. Peter to find out more.

  1. Suzanne Ryder says:

I find Peter truthful and direct, in a way that disturbs me greatly. It is the way he tells it like it is. I heard him recently talking about a phone call he got late one evening from a woman on a park bench with her two children. that image is one that cannot leave me. I hope that I and others can really hear his urgent message, enough to actually do something about this desperate situation. Thank you, Miriam, for bringing Peter and his message to my attention yet again.
