What does it all mean? is title of the latest book from Australian Jesuit Richard Leonard. Like most of his previous books, it came about on foot of a question posed to him by someone trying to grapple with their faith in the face of profound suffering. This time it was a question asked by a mother whose one-year-old child was accidentally run over by a relative.

His first book, Where the Hell is God?, was written after the tragic accident of his sister Tracey who was left quadriplegic at the age of 28. He has also written, Why Bother Praying?, and What Are We Doing on Earth for Christ’s Sake?  All his books have grappled with how our understanding of God can change for the better when we strip away the inadequate myths and platitudes that are often offered to us in the face of unbearable suffering.

Richard also talks about the correspondences and friendships that have grown out of such books. This latest book, he say, is a compilation of these last three books but with new material garnered from the letters and reflections he’s received over the years.
