Inspired by Laudato Si’, Frank Sammon, SJ has established a ‘Care for Our Common Home’ based in Rathgar Parish. The group aims to promote the encyclical’s message both within Rathgar parish, and in the greater Dublin region. It hopes to stimulate discussion on key issues such as climate justice, and to translate such discussion into action.

The group is hosting two public talks this autumn.

On Monday 19^th September, world renowned eco-theologian, Fr Sean McDonagh, SSC, will visit Rathgar to speak on Laudato Si’.

Fr McDonagh says the Laudato Si is one of the biggest theological changes in the Church in the last 500 years. He advised the Vatican on the first draft and says that for the first time Christianity has shifted from a human centred focus to an understanding that all life is in relationship and interdependent.

On Monday 17^th October, Anna Keega of Trócaire will speak on the impacts of climate change in Malawi. This event will also examine how Irish policy makers, citizens, parishes and religious organisations can promote climate justice and action on climate change.

In this two part series, Miriam Gormally will talk with both, but first she phoned Fr. Sean McDonagh to find out more why he thinks Laudato Si is such a fundamental shift in Church thinking.
